DENTAL IMPLANTS

Implant dentistry is a branch of dentistry that involves the placement of dental implants into the jawbone to replace missing teeth or provide support for dental prostheses, such as crowns, bridges, or dentures. Dental implants are small, titanium posts that are surgically inserted into the jawbone to serve as artificial tooth roots. They fuse with the bone through a process called Osseointegration, providing a stable foundation for replacement of teeth.

Dental implants function like your natural teeth, allowing you to eat your favourite foods with confidence and without pain. They are better alternatives to bridges which involve cutting the adjacent teeth to gain support and also definitely much better than dentures which are not fixed to the bone and hence need to be removed and inserted.

Parts of an implant:

Implant: This is a titanium stud/ post which is inserted into your jawbone and mimics the tooth root.

Abutment: This is an adapter that connects the implant and the crown.

Crown: It is the part that looks like the natural crown of the tooth and is placed onto the implant.

Procedure for implant placement:

The process of placing an implant is a procedure that may take several months but the advantages are many fold. The process involves the following steps:

Initial assessment: Your mouth will first be examined to see if you are a good candidate for dental implant placement. Not all patients can go in for implants and several factors are taken into consideration to determine whether an implant is suitable for you.

Comprehensive examination: This involves taking a thorough medical and dental history and also taking dental x rays and even CBCT scans. This will determine if the bone is healthy to receive an implant and also to see proximity of nerves and sinuses to the future implant site.

Bone grafting: In the event that the bone is not sufficient then bone grafting may be done to build up the bone.

Implant placement: This is a minor surgical procedure which involves making an incision and drilling the bone to place the implant and possibly a temporary crown.

Healing period: This may take several months (3-6 months) to allow the implant to integrate with the bone.

Abutment and crown placement: During the last appointment, the abutment followed by the crown is placed and then the procedure will be complete. Instructions will be given on how to take care of your implants so that you get the maximum benefit out of them and maintain them for a long time.
