Oral surgery or Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery encompasses a range of surgical procedures performed in the mouth, jaws, and facial region by dental specialists known as Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons.
Common oral surgical procedures include :
Tooth extraction: Extraction of completely erupted but badly decayed or broken teeth is one of the most common oral surgical procedures done. These teeth are extracted only when they cannot be saved anymore even by root canal treatment. The extraction is done to prevent further spread of infection to the jaw bones.
Removal of impacted teeth including wisdom teeth: Impacted teeth are those which do not have sufficient space to erupt out and are completely or partly hidden below the gums. This is especially true for wisdom teeth as they are the last teeth to develop in the jawbones. This causes issues like crowding, cheek bite, pain and inflammation.
Dental implant placement: Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth and since the implant which is a titanium post has to fuse with the bone, its placement involves a minor surgical procedure where the bone is drilled to receive the implant. For more details refer to Dental Implants section HERE
Corrective jaw surgery: Also known as orthognathic surgery, it is used to correct jaw misalignments which may be required to treat bite problems, speaking and breathing problems and treatment of facial trauma.
Removal of cysts or tumours: Some patients may develop cysts and tumours either in the soft tissues or in the jawbones. This may include the development of oral cancer also.Taking biopsies and then further excising will help to diagnose the disease as well as treat it respectively.
Each oral surgical procedure is different. Most of the procedures are minimally invasive and are treated on an outpatient basis as only local anaesthesia is given. For the success of the oral surgical procedures, strict adherence to pre and post operative instructions is of utmost importance.
