(ROOT CANAL TREATMENT)
Is Root Canal Treatment (RCT) necessary?
A root canal treatment is typically necessary when the dental pulp (the innermost part of the tooth) becomes infected or damaged due to decay, trauma, or other issues. Symptoms may include severe toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling, or a pimple on the gum. If not treated the infection may spread to the bone and can cause further pain and complications.
What happens during a root canal procedure?
A root canal treatment involves removing the infected or damaged pulp, cleaning and shaping the root canals, and then filling and sealing the space. In some cases, a crown may be recommended to protect, strengthen and restore the tooth.
Is Root Canal Treatment a painful procedure?
Modern root canal procedures are typically performed under local anesthesia, ensuring that the patient experiences minimal discomfort during the process. Advances in techniques such as rotary instruments make root canals more comfortable than in the past.
How many sittings are required for a Root Canal Treatment?
The number of sittings depends on the extent of infection. Approximately 2- 3 sittings are required and this may take a week’s time, however if the pain and infection is more it may take longer. Occasionally, if tooth condition is favourable single sitting RCT is performed too.
How long does it take to recover from a Root Canal Treatment?
Recovery time varies, but most people can resume normal activities the same day. Some discomfort is normal and can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.
Is a crown required post Root Canal Treatment?
The tooth that has come for root canal treatment is usually damaged and to restore, placement of crown is mandatory. Also, with the removal of pulp, the tooth moisture is gone making the tooth weak and brittle and thus may fracture. To protect and preserve the tooth, a crown is placed so that it can withstand the forces of chewing and also help to seal the tooth.
Are there any alternatives to a Root Canal Treatment?
In some cases, extraction of the tooth may be an alternative, but preserving natural teeth through root canal treatment is generally preferred whenever possible.
If the tooth is badly broken, can it be treated with Root Canal treatment?
Sometimes if the tooth is already badly broken, a post and core can be placed post root canal treatment to reinforce the tooth and help it withstand forces. However there may be exceptions to this case.
Are all Root Canal Treatments successful?
The success rate of root canal treatments is approximately 95% due to use of advanced materials and procedures. Accuracy in the steps helps to save the tooth and lead to a successful treatment.
