Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the study and treatment of dental pulp and the tissues surrounding the roots of teeth.The pulp of a tooth is the soft tissue present in the centre of the tooth and is surrounded by hard structures that are enamel and dentine. It contains nerves and blood vessels and thus becomes painful when infected.
When a cavity becomes very deep, the infection may reach the pulp from where it may spread to the bone.So in-order to protect and save the tooth, this infected pulp has to be removed and replaced by an artificial biocompatible material and the tooth further strengthened by then placement of a crown. This is what is known as root canal treatment.
